Heading into Week 3! and T-Shirts!

Some important news:
* Week 2's weekly challenge winner is Brandie! Congrats on communing with nature while training!
* Week 3's challenge: if you have done a tri, provide a good piece of advice for a newbie (something you wish you'd known before your first tri). If you have NOT done a tri, ask a question that you've been wondering about (and really, if you're wondering, so is someone else...).
* Almost halfway to the end of the month - lots of great training going on. By Sunday evening, ya'll had trained for over 2500 miles - roughly the distance to drive from Boston to Salt Lake City. If we can get to 3700 miles, we'll have travelled the distance to our farthest competitor who's all the way over in Oslo, Norway. Cool.
--------------------------
* T-shirts. Yes. Here's the skinny: we have a design that we're putting the final touches on. The general concept is that it will be a Champion Performance Tee (translates: slicky fabric / technical fabric / not your standard cotton undershirt). Cost: less than $20 each - I won't know the actual cost until I place the order, but in no case will it be more than $20.
* Go here: http://www.customink.com/signup/6wpd2k2 and sign up. There's a sizing chart on the webpage. Note that the design might change slightly, but that's the concept.
* Sign up by Thursday, 18 August. That'll allow me to order them in time to get them in and send them out over Labor Day weekend. I'll need to get mailing addresses, but will deal with that later.

  1. some discussion on the facebook event site about heart rate zones. fun!

and if you're not over there...here's my piece of advice: practice open water swimming before race day! somehow, it's different without the black stripe on the bottom of the pool. more later!

  2. Advice for newbies to triathlon: Well, Dawn stole mine. Can't overemphasize the importance of getting comfortable in open water before you attempt your first race in it.

Here's my second choice: If you have a hankering at all see what this triathlon business is all about, then dispel any anxiety you have and give it a tri. Tri a "sprint" distance race first, and you do NOT have to race anyone, just go at your own comfortable pace and have fun with it. You've done the training, so be confident in your conditioning - your body is always capable of more than you think it is. Don't be afraid to ask the other athletes questions. The triathletes are very friendly folks, and if they have ONE fault, it's that they love to talk about triathlon!

  3. Hey Mortal men and women,
My tip for those doing their first triathlon is this:
Write the location of your bike/equipment in the transition zone on the back of your hand with a permanent marker (after the race you can remove permanent marker with alcohol or baby oil). Anyway, mentally note any major landmarks (third tree on the left...big sign... port o' pot...). Sounds simple enough remembering where you left your bike, but it can be difficult after an oxygen deprived swim or an exhilarating bike ride, and knowing where you left your bike or running shoes/equipment can save precious transition time. Note the specifics of where your bike is racked in perspective to where you enter and exit the transition zone. Say you're entering the transition zone from the water and your bike is racked on the 5th rack on the right...I would write 5L on the back of my hand. In addition to the notation on the back of my hand I tie a bright yellow bandanna on the rack itself signifying where my bike and equipment are located. Oh yea, and don't forget to fasten your helmet before you mount the bike...
best wishes and have fun on your first triathlon!

  4. Great tips and questions! Larry asked about heart rates, Dean says "just do it," and Linda posted a great idea about how to find your stuff in transition! Sweet!
